Schools 7s Programme

Railway runs a girls’ schools rugby 7s programme during the school year that involves a structured programme of coaching and culminates in a tournament for the participating schools.

  • There are programmes at all levels - from 1st to 6th year.
  • Railway provides coaching that can be hosted at your school at a time and day of your choosing.  Alternatively, for schools with limited facilities, we can host training at our grounds in Sandymount
  • All Railway coaches are appropriately accredited and garda-vetted
  • The coaching level and programme is of the highest quality and has been devised and is led by Railway coach Mere Baker.  Mere is one of the most decorated female players in the game and has played 15s and 7s for New Zealand, won the rugby league world cup with New Zealand, won the Hong Kong 7s (the most prestigious 7s tournament in the world) six times and has coached international women’s 7s rugby
  • Where you have existing rugby coaches, we can provide the programme to them
  • The tournament is run on a series basis, modelled on the IRB Women's World Series, with five tournaments throughout the school year against other schools
  • The tournament is played at three grades - Senior (5th/6th), TY and Junior (1st/2nd/3rd)
  • We host additional ‘open sessions’ set days at Railway for girls participating in the programme where we can work on individual skills with them

Requirements from the School

  • We would require a ‘champion’ within the schools to promote the programme amongst the girls and be present at the training.  This would ideally be a teacher or existing sports coach
  • Railway would assist in the promotion by providing posters and other promotional material
  • The school ‘champion’ would also be present on the day of the tournament to manage the school team

Benefits to the School and Your Pupils

  • This can complement your existing sports programme by offering equal opportunities to girls in your school to play rugby and help in increasing female participation in sports
  • It can aid the school in achieving their Active School Flag status
  • This program will provide another opportunity for the girls in your school to become more active. Being involved with rugby will not only develop your pupils' fitness, but will also help to develop communication skills, leadership skills, the ability to focus and many more life skills
  • All sessions are designed to have full participation by pupils in a fun, safe environment
  • Our goal is to introduce the opportunity of sampling rugby to as many young people as possible. We do so in a professional manner with the player’s enjoyment and interaction at the core of all our sessions
  • As well as an increased female participation in sport, we believe there is the distinct possibility that we may unearth a future Olympian in your school.  There will be 15 Katie Taylors playing rugby 7s for Ireland in Rio 2016 and beyond – there is a huge opportunity to identify and develop girls from your school to be one of these
